Chapter Fifteen

“How did you know what I was looking for?” Silje asked as she and Nick strolled along the beach at Agia Galini after dark.

“Well, I just had a hunch after Bevens gave me the information about the treasure of Minos. I thought about the fact that Phaistos and Knossos have been excavated extensively, so if the treasure and the labyrinth really did exist, then they had to be in places that were undisturbed and predated the Bronze Age of Knossos. It’s how I would have pursued the same problem.”

“So, the archaeologist thing really wasn’t a cover?” she laughed.

Her laugh had a sweet tone to it, like the ringing of tiny bells. Nick had to swallow a lump in his throat before responding to her. “Not for Ishi and me, anyway. Nat is our bodyguard.”

“Seriously?” Silje laughed again. “She looks more like a Latin supermodel.”

“She and her sister, Cat, were highly trained in Thailand by the Colombian government. They were developed to infiltrate drug cartels and paramilitary organizations. I’ve seen those two girls do shit that completely blows your mind.”

“I guess looks are deceiving,” Silje responded. “Most people don’t pin me as an archaeologist or a tomb raider either.”

“And yet you’re a legendary one.”

“I wouldn’t go that far.”

“You are in my mind.”

There was a long pause as the subject had run its course.

Silje started laughing again before she spoke. “Hiero told me more about your labrys from Cyprus. Where the hell did you come up with that?”

“I had to come up with some reason why we had been authorized to wander around in a restricted area.”

“And that’s what you came up with?” she giggled.

“Pretty bad, huh?” he chuckled.

“Actually, it was pretty good.”

“It seemed like it had been true enough to get Hiero to buy it.”

“Hiero is an idiot.”

“I sense there is a lot more to that statement than a commentary on his intelligence.”

“Yeah? Well, I sensed that there was a lot more about your Cat and Nat story than what you told.”

“I’ll tell you mine if you’ll tell me yours,” Nick laughed.

There was another long pause as each decided how much they wanted to reveal about themselves to the other. They’d both had their share of loves gone bad, but neither of them really wanted to dwell on it.

“I love being out on the beach under the stars,” Silje whispered after a few moments. “A full moon is nice, but I prefer no moon and starlight, like tonight.”

“It does have a magical feel, doesn’t it?”

“Hmmmm.”

Again, the two of them fell silent, listening to the plunging and retreat of the waves and gazing up at the twinkling display against the black velvet sky.

“You know what?” Nick said after a moment. “I don’t want to know your story about Hiero.”

Silje laughed again. “That’s good, because I really don’t want to tell it.”

“Well, now, that makes me want to hear it,” Nick chuckled.

“How about we let the past be the past, the present be the present and the future be the future?” Silje suggested.
